Review of Agora (2009) by Ned P — 21 Jan 2012
Agora may or may not be historically accurate. The love story within could be either sufficient or done better. The scientific facts may or may not be placed in the correct time-frame. Also, acting and technical or artistic skill will always be subject to personal preference.
The truly exceptional value of this movie lies in it's message: "No religion or philosophy has a monopoly on the basic human decency." The morality of various groups can never be absolute as long as people outside of these groups have rights, as they should.
Agora beautifully portrays those cultural and religious struggles. This is why I cannot give it less than five stars.
