Review of Agora (2009) by Valéria V — 05 Mar 2012
This movie affected me deeply. How difficult it is to be a woman in the company of powerful men. Gosh when even your father pats you fondly on the head and says "yes dear" it must be frustrating to say the least. This story may be fictional but I could really identify with it and I was surprised by how much. Historical accuracy is definitely second place to a good story in my mind.
Having read other reviews I'd like to add that this film is aesthetically pleasing. One review said the film is too busy trying to tie history to the present. I disagree with that view. The use of politics and religion as tools for power and status is a golden oldie. The making of pawns and devotees is shown in black and white. I guess it comes easy to some people.
