Review of Agnes of God (1985) by Jennifer A — 18 May 2005
Yesterday I watched "Agnes of God." I had heard about this movie because having been involved in theatre I knew about the play. I had known about it for so long that I half assumed the movie was a classic and thus did not hesistate to watch it when I learned that it would be on HBO.
Enter Jane Fonda and all my assumptions about the movie being a classic went out the window. Fonda plays a psychiatrist who rarely breathes fresh air as she is such a chain smoker. She did not convince me as a smoker, but she didn't do a terrible job playing her part as psychologist which was somewhat surprising.
Opposite Fonda is Anne Bancroft who did an amazing job as the mother superior. You kinda want to be on her side just to upset Jane Fonda. In the end you want to be on her side because Jane Fonda's explanation of what happened in the convent is not convincing at all.
I liked the movie. It stemed from an interesting premise and continued to be interesting even though the ending was a little disappointing. It's still a 1985 movie set in Canada though, so don't expect too much of it.
