Review of Afterschool (2009) by Jim G — 20 Dec 2009
This is an odd little flick indeed. Some interesting camera work here--almost all of the main action is relegated to the margins of the frame, and nothing is ever quite "centered"--this idea, of course, corresponds to one of the main themes in this film.
The comparisons to ELEPHANT are inevitable, and I suppose the two films are linked thematically because they focus on mindless or needless violence and/or tragedy among adolescents, but AFTERSCHOOL--for better or worse--penetrates more deeply into the mind of one character, whereas ELEPHANT used more a more ecological approach, if you will.
