Review of After the Wedding (2006) by Lucia S — 19 Jan 2008
A very moving and poignant story directed masterfully by Susanne Bier. This movie didn't get the full attention it deserved at it release due to the competition of Pan's Labyrinth and The Lives of others.
I liked that this movie wasn't formulaic. THe choice that Jacob had to make was so brutally complicated and likewise the choice that Jorgen had to make--to plan for after his death. The part where he can't hold it together anymore is heart-breaking.
Even though the movie starts off a bit slowly, hang in there, the glimpse into the intimate family setting with all its raw emotions is well worth it.
