Review of After the Wedding (2006) by Melissa H — 27 Jan 2008
'After the Wedding' has been striking an emotional chord for people all over the world, and has reduced a friend of mine to tears on more than one occasion. I feel a bit strange admitting it (as though some part of me were missing), but it didn't resound for me on an emotional level - in fact, it left me a little cold.
Oh, it's an easy film to admire - beautifully acted, interesting situations, and at least one character whose ultimate goals and motivations are totally unexpected. By all objective criteria it is an extremely well crafted piece.
But the characters always remained at arm's length to me - I just couldn't relate to them (which says more about me, I imagine, than about the film itself). Having said that, the situation never lost my interest.
Ultimately I admired it, but can't say I loved it - you may well feel very differently.
