Review of After the Wedding (2006) by Fernando S — 25 Sep 2008
The main character here is played by Mads Mikkelsen, best known to Americans as the villain Le Chiffre in the Bond film Casino Royale. Here he's the good guy. He's this guy running an orphanage in India who finds himself having to go back home to Denmark to confront some old emotional wounds.
And some new ones too. This is directed by the same Danish woman who made Brothers a few years ago. This is easily as potent, if not more so. She obviously loves those gut-wrenching kinds of family dramas.
I saw this at my local art house in April of 2007. After having seen Casino Royale three times at that point, in which Mads had played a real nut, it was weird seeing him here as just a normal guy, ya know? This was also, by the way, a nominee for Best Foreign Film.
