Review of After the Wedding (2006) by Matthew L — 31 May 2009
Street kids in India? Well, that was just a ruse. This Dogme 95 (look it up) film about secrets had turn after turn leading up to a surprise resolution when Mumbai schoolteacher Jacob returns to India, having gone to Denmark to negotiate funding for his projects.
The major surprises in the film are finding out more about the financier's daughter, her husband, and how Jacob's life is intertwined with all of them. I don't know much about Danish actors, but I really liked Helene's character, played by Sidse Babett Knudsen.
At times, you couldn't tell her true emotions, having discovered her motives partway through the film. Then again, once you learn more about Jacob, it hurts to second-guess his heart, given the opening scene of the movie.
Eh, B+.
