Review of After Hours (1985) by Isaac S — 16 May 2009
Scorsese always seemed a bit over-the-top and ridiculous to me in his dramatic movies, which I suppose is a stylistic preference but in my mind one that doesn't work. Thankfully, it's much more naturally suited to a comedy, one that has excellent acting, a great script, and is written extremely well.
The best thing by far is how it captures that "late night" feel that so many good films, so kudos to Scorsese. Another thing I like about this film is that his direction has matured by this point so it feels much less raw than his earlier, "classic" films, but still not too lush and over-managed like his later stuff; a real sweet spot.
