Review of After Hours (1985) by Ryan M — 28 Jan 2016
Hilarious. Probably owes more to the Hollywood Screwball than to Franz Kafka, but the Prague absurdist's worldview definitely informed the writing here. Scorsese films the script with his usual workmanship, and the net result is surprisingly tight.
.. Scorsese seems to have dropped a variety of anomalous movies into the tough-guys-enacting-morality-plays ouvre we know him best for (see also 'Kundun', 'Last Temptation of Christ', 'Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore', etc.
). These diverse works evidence a greater directorial versatility than we Americans maybe give the guy credit for. 'After Hours' I think should sit in the upper-tier of Scorsese's left-field films; it's an imaginative farce that dares to be ridiculous.
