Review of Ae Fond Kiss... (2004) by Lynne N — 17 Jan 2008
Funny and heart-warming in places, and the story keeps your interest. The acting, for the most part, is of a good standard. Unfortunately the performances aren't consistent and some of the supporting cast - particularly Casim's older sister - give diabolically wooden turns.
I also found it hard to root for the couple as their relationship seemed to be based on little other than the ridiculously graphic sex scenes. Roisin seemed to have such a weak grasp on who Casim was - his culture, family and ambitions - that I found it hard to believe their love was so earth-shatteringly powerful.
In fact, Roisin became a bit grating towards the end of the film. Also, is it wrong that I had a little bit of sympathy for the priest's point of view? I'm sure there was some hypocrisy at work in his decision not to support Roisin's job application, but her hypocrisy was just as bad - falling back on her Catholic faith only when it suited her.
Whilst 'Fond Kiss' does have some insight - it is a flawed film and should be approached with caution.
