Review of Advantageous (2015) by Matthew S — 28 Jun 2015
There can be no denying that Jennifer Phang has made a low-budget film look amazing. The talent displayed both in front and behind the camera is quite skilled. The dystopian future we see appears to be even more problematic for women, age and race than now.
The idea of "identity" and "empowerment" are explored in a truly horrific choice. I could not avert my eyes from the screen. But as the end credits began I was left with an odd reaction.
I'm still not sure if Phang ended the ending to be somehow "hopeful" or cringe-worthy off-kilter "Stella Dalls" kind of martyrdom. There is something problematic in the resolution, but it doesn't mean it doesn't deserve merit.
