Review of Adult World (2014) by Jim L — 03 Jul 2014
So I love Emma Roberts. Emma working in an adult store? Hell yeah! But it's a lot more than that. And the adult store seems pretty mild.
Roberts plays a young woman trying to make it as a poet. The opening scene is something a famous poet did, and because it's America, the movie is later dumbed down with a poster of said famous poet.
But basically, Roberts begins working at this mom-and-pop porn store to pay, first for stamps to send off her work, then her own place. In the process, she meets a pop poet in Cusack's character and tries to follow in his footsteps.
I guess it was a likable enough movie but it may be on the bad side. Roberts' character is kinda lame, as is Cusacks. Other than that, it's just kind of empty. It does build up to a point and that is worth applause, but as some imdb posters have said, they're not characters you can really relate to. She's kinda selfish and absorbed in this world for whatever reason. There's a cross-dresser thrown in there. Cusack doesn't have much personality other than being distant. Peters' character is the closest thing to resembling normal, but his role is not overly big so I don't know what that means we're left with.
