Review of Adult World (2014) by Carolyn C — 13 Jun 2015
Rather charming little movie. A good view of what it is like as a fledgling adult, in the blank space that is 'not a child and not an adult'.
Just the fact that she is working in "Adult World", but not heeding any of its particulars is appropriate.
This movie does a good job of portraying what it is like to be young, female, and unsteady on only just adult legs and not yet mentally invested in accountability or even (in some respects) reality.
If I were to pick out the things I felt needed work? The plot was a bit jumbled and rushed. The main young characters were easy to believe (Emma Roberts and Evan Peters' roles) and well thought out...but (and maybe purposefully, but to the movies detriment) the established adults seemed to be written as if the author didn't quite understand them...like they are crayon drawings on a bland piece of paper. I love John Cusack, and he did a fine job...but it was very hard to even see him as being in any manner dastardly, as I had so little feeling about his flat character to even invest enough to dislike or like him at all.
Emma Roberts does a particularly good job of lead. I believe everything she feels and wants and thinks. And being that I am far-removed from her age bracket, this is impressive.
Worth watching, good rhythm and pace. For that matter, a nice little soundtrack as well. Some real funny bits, and not too judgmental to its characters, one and all..I do recommend giving this a watch.
