Review of Adoration (2013) by Thomas W — 09 Sep 2013
I assume the makers of Adore went with this title because "Vomit" or "Trash" wouldn't have been as easy a sell. I mean ... really. I am all for movies featuring strong leading roles for female actors over the age of 40 but this one is too much.
Naomi Watts (The Impossible) and Robin Wright (Forrest Gump) star as lifelong best friends who live on an idyllic beach in Australia just down the road from one another ... and appear to have been this close their entire lives.
We see them as kids, then as mothers of two young sons as Lil (Watts) loses her husband and then again ten or so years later as the boys are grown young men. Well ... as the women become somewhat bored with their lives I guess they realized they have always had sexual desires for their best friend's son .
.. even though one son calls the other lady "like my second mother". Yes ... vomit in a popcorn bucket. The entire film is uneasy and somewhat repulsive as I don't know what to make of any of these characters.
While the acts seem to be instigated by the boys (uh ...) the mothers sure don't reject the advances. The dialogue is cornier than an Iowa pasture and while Watts and Wright do a fine job in these heinous roles they aren't enough to make this good.
The sole reason to see this bad film is to laugh at how awful it is. It went for European art house but it is more euro-trash. Watch and cringe ... or don't watch it at all.
