Review of Adoration (2013) by Mike C — 15 Apr 2014
It's very well made and still the critics absolutely hate it. I won't go that far but I did not like it.
It's based on a novella and that's where it belongs. Brokeback Mountain was based on like a 37-page short story...but given the time lapse in that story, it easily translated into a two-plus hour movie. This, not so much. You basically have two handsome young men hanging out with their attractive mothers. The shorter in duration, the less crazy that seems. Extended to nearly two hours, all I can wonder is how in the hell two guys who look like that only spend time with their mothers! Ridiculous!
So, it's a pretty picture. Wright's character is slightly better than her character on House of Cards, and Watts is still attractive, and the male leads are annoyingly handsome. And it's mostly on a beach or on pretty property. But the story just does not add up. Maybe it's warped, but if they're consenting adults, where is the drama? But they do try hard to introduce it and that leads to a movie that is too long and an ending that is little more plausible than the rest of the movie.
