Review of Adaptation. (2002) by Sam N — 19 Jul 2012
You definitely ask why you had to grow so old, bald and fat Nicolas? Couldn't you be the happy go lucky, charming, blonde badass and Casanova as in 1986's Peggy Sue Got Married? But here the transformation is what you see.
The adaptation of a writer from another writer from another world and concept altogether. What astounds you is his being a super writer himself facing tough competition with his twin's expertise in thriller movie script, his struggles to adapt himself in real life, deliver a good movie script to his company and then his perpetual obsession and fan sabotage incidents with another famous writer, Meryl Streep who has her own bohemian, charismatic, vivacious, daunting and threatening nature in the flick.
It's like Nicolas lives in his imagination world where the author (Meryl Streep) of the book (about rarity and beauty of orchids) that fascinates him smiles on the cover page solely for him and has ears for his day to day banter.
How he spies on her and then gets a cold shoulder from her in the real life brings us all down to the realism but makes us sad nevertheless on the part of someone who falls in love with the author, her ideas and the world she sees and portrays.
How she get traumatized and offensive when she mistakes his harmless obsession for her as him being a detective/police man/journalist to arrest/expose her and her lover on account of uncovering infidelity, possession of illegal Indian herbs and owning a green house growing the same illegally, is worth watching for anyone who is into the vicious cycle of celeb obsession.
This movie made me think. It's not one of those movie you watch and forget. This would pierce right through you.
