Review of Adam's Rib (1949) by Leighton T — 27 Aug 2009
While I cannot deny the witty interplay, the great story concept with its gender politics, and terrific casting, not to mention downplayed direction from Cukor, I felt the film fell off a little in it's second half (after the trial, mostly).
The film zips right along and we get the verdict, and in that hour, hour and fifteen minutes, it's terrific, but the resolve of Adam and Amanda, the juxtaposition of the trial and the real-life example of what Amanda and Adam are fighting for in court, feels like it takes too much time to come together, despite being very entertaining.
Hepburn and Tracy show what was their terrific chemistry off and on screen and Judy Holliday, Tom Ewell, and David Wayne are all hilarious in supporting roles.
