Review of Ad Astra (2019) by Cristoparado — 29 Sep 2019
A tale of overcoming depression through humility. Set in a vague “not so distant future” where mankind has reached the edge of the solar system in Neptune (as Pluto is no longer thought of as a planet) but remains unable to reach into the intricacies of the soul for lack of volition and surpluses of fear.
The movie moves slowly but surely into the protagonist’s acceptance of his universal needs, doubts and longings amidst a mostly gloomy atmosphere accomplished through tense and low music, sparse sound effects, and long voice-overs.
It takes a nuclear explosion for the protagonist to shake off his reluctance to bond with the world thus transforming himself into a new shape of the father figure. Pitt’s performance goes splendidly from emotional unavailability to a calm vulnerability in surrender.
