Review of Act of Valor (2012) by Charlie S — 22 Dec 2012
Act of Valor. Or Call of Duty: The Movie. It's fun and the action scenes are great and very entertaining, but I feel like the filmmakers sacrificed a lot of the real drama by shooting it like a video game (i.
E. so many gun POV shots). But then again, maybe they did it because without a little style the movie would have fallen flat? I don't know. The actors are real life Navy Seals so you know the acting isn't going to be great, and for the most part, they did as much as they could.
Overall, I feel like the 'real navy seals' bit was kind of a ploy to get people to watch it. It was pretty heavy handed in it's message, and there was a lot of blatant foreshadowing which almost became too much to handle.
Where Act of Valor shines though is the action/stealth scenes. Because they're real seals, these scenes feel very genuine in how the characters move, speak, and interact with each other and their environment.
But for my tastes, there aren't enough of these scenes to make the film worth watching again.
