Review of Across the Universe (2007) by Grant F — 22 May 2012
An epic feast of imagination, romance, and music from the mind of cinematic visionary Julie Taymor. When she took on the project, thousands of Beatles purists shouted, "Don't Let Me Down." And it's not a let-down, at least not in the sense of the Beatles music.
From a writing standpoint, the characters (minus maybe Lucy, Jude, and Max) are flat and pointless, but the new covers are great and performed by a fresh and energetic cast. Some musical numbers, like "I Want to Hold Your Hand" find new meaning in the lyrics.
Others ("Come Together", "I Want You", "Strawberry Fields Forever") are gorgeous set-pieces. Still, there are those that seemed to have been thrown in just for the hell of it ("Dear Prudence", "Something", "While My Guitar Gently Weeps").
Still, it is a joyous and breathtaking experience that any fan of Beatles music or entertaining cinema should see.
