Review of Absentia (2011) by Brett B — 05 Sep 2012
Understated and thoughtful, ABSENTIA is a fine supernatural thriller that leaves quite an impression. Though its low budget is evident, the film looks pretty slick and polished, and there's some inventive, striking shot compositions.
The story takes its time establishing the premise, and (more importantly) the characters; it's incredibly refreshing to have leads in a so-called horror film that are actually likable and sympathetic, and this film pulls that off.
There are some great, utterly chilling moments and images peppered throughout, and the film's final movements are extremely effective in their contemplative nature. The indie horror scene doesn't often produce a lot of quality, but ABSENTIA certainly qualifies.
