Review of About Schmidt (2002) by Mikko L — 15 May 2008
This movie is s l o w... It has all the 256 shades of gray all over it. Nicholson plays insurance agent (with the occupation chosen apparently to match the interest value of this flick) Schmidt who retires and suffers from post-retirement depression.
He's sick and tired of everything. He's got a withering wife who is not Helen Hunt, or even Diane Keaton, but someone who could just as well be his mother (I first mistook her for his mother).
And she makes Schmidt to sit on the toilet seat while he's peeing. Well, Schmidt then joins this charity organization to help the thirld world kids and becomes the sponsor of this six year-old Nkandu (?) from Tanzania.
The one start I gave this flick comes from the letters Schmidt writes to Nkandu. It's kinda amusing how and in what words he pours his soul totally to this six year-old illiterate Tanzanian, describing in detail how he's tired to his withering wife (picture here an extreme close-up of his wife's armpit with the skin hanging flacid) and how he's tired with everything else for that matter.
Well, the wife dies, and Shcmidt decides to go on a road trip, driving around, and ending to Denver where he tries to prevent his daughter from marrying this pyramide scheme-participating moron. In vain.
As everything is, has been, and apparently continues to be. If I'd give this flick another star it'd be out of pity, but I'll leave it be. Maybe one star would kick him towards a change he'd desperately need.
