Cuts right to the bone. I've never been the biggest Jack Nicholson fan, but he employs some admirable understatement here. It's truly disarming, and satisfying, to see him nail the disaffected Midwestern ennui that I've come to know from living my whole life where the majority of this film is set.
Payne hasn't done wrong yet.
