Review of About Schmidt (2002) by Nate W — 03 Jul 2011
Jack Nicholson gives an affecting and sadly funny performance as a senior citizen grappling with his retirement and the recent passing of his wife. Alexander Payne's direction astutely captures what it feels like to be old and lonely.
Even though it's threatened by a near-lethargic pace, the end of the picture makes clear that it is a thoughtful and emotionally grounded (though not emotionally explicit) meditation on happiness, sorrow, and the value of one's life.
