Review of About Schmidt (2002) by Scott M — 18 Oct 2011
Alexander Payne doesn't woo me as much as he does others, but this film is enjoyable if for no other reason than it features a very against type performance from Nicholson. He resists his usual impulse to take his character up and over the top, allowing him to give a very memorable performance.
However, despite the terrific ending, I found the quirks of the characters Schmidt encounters to be too basic and uninteresting. The awkwardness overpowers the drama too often.
