Review of About Schmidt (2002) by Dawdlingpoet — 22 Nov 2021
At first I thought Schmidt seemed like an American version of Victor Meldrew (from the UK sitcom 'One Foot In The Grave'). The plot is quite amusing at times and sad at others but I did find myself feeling a bit of both respect and sympathy towards the titular character.
He's a very human character, who becomes the victim to many petty type nuisances and so he's quite a relatable character as well. It is a somewhat thoughtful film that I quite enjoyed. Its by no means a fast paced drama but it certainly didn't bore me either - as a character based drama, I thought it was quite good.
Its fair to say that Jack Nicholson gives a decent performance in this film. I also quite liked the jaunty sounding soundtrack present in suitable scenes/at suitable moments. Its a somewhat endearing watch, although I wouldn't say its a saccharine sweet film, there is a bit of that but its not over-bearing and as such it doesn't over-do things, which I was glad of as I don't much care for such over the top type films, generally speaking.
It has an understated-ness to it which, I felt, worked in its favour.
