Review of About Schmidt (2002) by Justin R — 13 May 2012
I liked it a lot. As I was watching it, I started feeling like The Descendants was ripping off this movie...big time! A lot of the unfolding plot and elements throughout the film were identical. The real kicker was the daughter's fiancà (C) was the exact same type of character that the daughter's guy friend was in The Descendants.
..an overly idiotic character that seems to be played for comic relief, but is so absurdly dumb that he has no right being in the film. About Schmidt was superior to The Descendants in general, but knowing this came first gives it an edge too.
After I was finding all the similarities, I checked it out and found out The Descendants was the same writer/director as this film. He shouldn't have been nominated for remaking About Schmidt under a different light.
