Review of About Last Night (2014) by Manny C — 08 Mar 2014
Her Review:
A modern re-imagining of the classic film About Last Night tells the story of two unlikely couples who journey from casual sex into the real world as couples. Danny and Bernie are single guys living their lives on the wild side. When Danny meets Debbie via Bernie's new fling Joan, things start the change. Danny and Debbie take their passionate one night into a full-blown relationship. Their ups and downs, trials and tribulations reflect the various stages of relationships be they casual or serious. The question is will their love survive it all. Starring Kevin Hart, Michael Ealy, Regina Hall, Joy Bryant, Christopher McDonald, Adam Rodriguez, Joe Lo Trugilo, Paula Patton, Terrell Owens, Catherine Shu, David Greenman, Bryan Callen.
About Last Night is an easy-going film that is built for the audience to just sit back, have a drink and a good time. Nothing new and magical here but still some entertainment to make it worth your while.
I will be straight with you, I haven't seen the original About Last Night from 1986 but I will definitely go watch it now. So with that in mind my review will be based solely on the film as is and not a comparison with the original it pays homage to. That said, this rendition of About Last Night was overall funny and entertaining. I wasn't enthralled with it because it was predictable and lacked true movie magic. However, it was definitely funny and so therefore enjoyable. My favorite story line was Joan and Bernie. Kevin Hart and Regina Hall were hilarious together. Their comedic timing was perfect! Without the two of them the film would have been lacking.
Out of everything out this Valentine's Day weekend this will likely be the winner for couples to see on their romantic night out. Both men and women can enjoy it which is a big plus. I will say however this movie is like some of the more shallow relationships it depicts. It is definitely a one night stand you will forget all about in the morning.
7/10 Stars - It's funny at times but we have seen it all before.
His Review:
I really didn't see the need to remake this movie. I felt the whole time like I was being "told" a story rather than being shown the story. I just found this movie annoying and I think it was because of Kevin Hart. The serious story was too flat and unoriginal, and the 2 crazies who just had sex every other scene were just too loud and obnoxious. I found nothing memorable about this movie (except maybe the Chicken Mask) and that doesn't bode well for me liking a movie without at least something grabbing hold. Is it me or does Kevin Hart remind anyone of a spazzy Steve Urkel? I just don't find him funny! Anyways, this is merely the story of 2 different couples, 1 serious, 1 crazy, nothing special here. Move on!
5/10 Stars - Plain, unoriginal and unmemorable! This bored me more than anything!
