Review of A Wrinkle in Time (2018) by The3Academysins — 12 Mar 2018
A Wrinkle in Time is easily the most disappointing movie I have seen thus far in 2018, and also the worst Disney film I have seen in a while. I have not read the book "A Wrinkle in Time" but the person I saw this movie with did, and they disliked it even more than I did.
This film has a lot of problems. The biggest problem is that the script makes no sense. Nothing is explained, the plot jumps around everywhere, and the word "universe" is said probably 80 times in the first hour. There's a cheesy "be yourself and believe in yourself" message that feels tacked on, and not truly genuine. Character motivations aren't really discussed outside of Meg's, and the pacing is diabolically bad.
The direction is not much better. Some of the visuals actually look really bad. My two favorite shots of the film were Meg's room at the beginning, and the reunion between Meg and her father. Unfortunately this is not Ava Duvernay's best work at all.
The acting is all over the place. Charles Wallace and Meg are fine, but Calvin is the most wooden actor I have ever seen. The talents of Oprah Winfrey, Chris Pine, Reese Witherspoon, Mindy Kaling, and Zach Galifianakis are completely wasted. Chris Pine also does this weird face through the whole movie? You'll see what I mean.
I knew this was going to be bad when the theater showed a trailer for "A Wrinkle in Time" before the movie itself started playing. Skip this one. There are better kids movies to see.
