Review of A Woman Under the Influence (1974) by Hyatt H — 12 Feb 2008
The most unnerving moments in "A woman..." take place when the camera cuts to a close up of lead actress, Gena Rowlands. Her unflinchingly realistic portrayal of Mabel, a mentally ill mother/wife, transcends all stereotypes of familiar characters from other films (e.
G. "I am Sam," "the other sister"). Perhaps this is because the film relies on little theatrics; instead focusing on the smallest exchanges between people...which is something that most films ignore.
