It's the ol' I've reached a crisis let's hit the Appalachian Trail movie. Can't anybody hike this thing just for fun? Oh, Hollywood, you silly girl. The movie isn't bad, but it's not great, just ho-hum.

It's supposed to be funny, but I didn't catch myself laughing even once. And yeah, you've got a couple of stalwart actors in Nolte and Redford, but their characters and the story-line are pretty cliche.

Bill Bryson, Redford, is about to retire, but instead of just sitting around, he decides to go for a walk, a big, long walk. He can't find a partner, but one eventually materialises in an old friend he hasn't seen in ages, Katz.

Bryson is the accomplished writer while Katz, Nolte, never quite got anything going in his life. Yes, and there's the normal, I-don't-give-a-crap guy who still acts cavalier as his more accomplished buddy tries to make the trip one of merit.

They don't finish the trip, but do almost die on a cliff, get killed by an angry cuckold, encounter the freezing cold, and almost get eaten by some bears, so put that on your gay o' time bucket-list and shovel it.

You've seen many a road trip film before. This one you can just throw in there with no special markings. Very pedestrian.
