There are three very big problems with this movie.

There was terrible miscasting. The age of Bill Bryson.

When he walked the Appalachian trail was roughly at age of 47. Since Katz his hiker colleague was an old school friend he was roughly about the same age. Robert Redford at age 79 was cast as Bryson, while Nick Nolte at age of 75 was cast as Katz. The story line simply doesn't mesh with actors who look like they are a sneeze away from living in a nursing home.

The screenplay was tepid, substituting typical Hollywood "cuteness in a can" for the wit of Bryson. Katz and Marry Ellen were hysterical in the book, but the screenwriters didn't translate the characters in words or actions.

Lastly there were large deviations in story and content which lost the charming and arresting quality of the book.

As Mary Ellen would say, "Big big mistake.".
