Review of A Very Long Engagement (2004) by Madeline M — 15 May 2008
This film had two things I love: World War I and light houses. However, the style was a little too similar to Amelie for me to really be comfortable with it as a film. And I'm not sure if quirk+gore is an effective storytelling technique - I realize the juxtaposition is kind of the point but it doesn't really work as well as we might wish.
Also, although the framing of the shots was beautiful, the coloring was kind of weird. I recommend it, though, mostly.
