Review of A Very Long Engagement (2004) by Anne F — 21 May 2008
Mathilde refuses to believe that her soldier fiancé died after being sent to die in No Mans' Land as punishment for self-mutilation during WW1, and sets out on an obsessive search for him. The film makes very effective use of flashbacks to tell the story, and is perhaps the best depiction I have seen of the utter barbarity of trench warfare.
