Review of A Very Long Engagement (2004) by Saad N — 23 Dec 2008
One of the most beautiful films I've ever seen. The use of light is so artistic, as well as so important to the overall theme of the story. Everything about this film is atmospheric. From the music to the color palette. Audrey Tatou is wonderful in this. She is stoic through most of the film, but there are moment when she her "mask" slips and she is heartbreaking. Gaspard Ulliel took what could have easily been a secondary character and made it all his own. He, for all intents and purposes, has almost no dialogue. However, he emotes better than most actors of this generation. He doesn't need to talk. It's all in his eyes, and the same goes for Audrey. I would HIGHLY recommend this film.
Side note: Do not watch this to pass time. You need to watch it a few times before everything really comes together completely. You can't slouch on the job with this one.
