Review of A Very Long Engagement (2004) by Rocko S — 24 Jan 2011
The weirdest (or perhaps the greatest?) thing about Jeunet is that he doesn't really have a distinct style of filmmaking. Every one of his films does have a sense of whimsy (the amount of which varies) but if you compare this film to say, Amelie, there's an ocean of difference.
Apart from it's gorgeous art direction, there is nothing very special about this film. It's an interesting story with a bland ending, but admittedly, it does have remnants of a classic romance war film, although, I think we're pretty much sick of those.
I was not really impressed. It's not really bad though. But it's not great either.
