Review of A Very Brady Sequel (1996) by Commish G — 18 Apr 2010
(from The Watermark 09/01/96).
They're ba-ack! Imagine my surprise to find the second big-screen version of the horrid 70's sitcom to be every bit as entertaining as the original Brady Bunch Movie. I loved the first film, which established the new cast and satirized the Brady brood in general with a flimsy plot to tie the jokes together. The second film, which once again juxtaposes the 1970's Brady sensibility against 1990's culture, plays much more like a two-hour episode of the TV show. Carol's presumed-dead first husband (Matheson) has returned to claim his wife and three daughters. Meanwhile, Jan is still trying to find her individuality by inventing an imaginary boyfriend, Marcia and Greg start having hormonal feelings for each other, and the kids break into one of their tacky songs whenever they feel like it. If you grew up with the Bradys like I did, then you'll find this to be one groovy movie. QUEER QUOTIENT: RuPaul is back as Jan's guidance counselor. Also, Carol is abducted and taken to Hawaii. There, an auto rental agent points out that Hawaii is very tolerant of gay people. To his surprise, Carol responds with, "I wish I was gay again - back home with Marcia, Jan, Cindy, and Alice, where I was happy.".
