Review of A United Kingdom (2016) by Nicolette H — 14 Jan 2017
Close to a 4 1/2. So today got to go to a special screening of this at the Palm Springs International Film Festival. Actress & wife of David Oyelowo, Jessica Oyelowo was there for a Q&A after. I gotta say, I'm shocked that I never heard this story.
Never heard of Seretse Khama or his wife Ruth & what they did for Botswana. Beautiful story. Moved me & brought me to tears several times. I will say it got a little slow but it wasn't bad, kept me interested throughout.
Beautiful direction by Amma Asante (yay for female directors). Great cinematography. Loved the locations. The whole cast was great. David Oyelowo & Rosamund Pike were wonderful. Chemistry was beautiful.
Music was great. Love true story movies. Also I'm a sucker for movies about people who "shouldn't" fall in love & that people don't want them together but they are in love! Ha ha.
I say definitely check it out when it comes out next month. It's a wonderful, inspiring, romantic story people should be aware of. I do also want to say, the Q&A with Jessica Oyelowo was wonderful too.
She said she & her husband David wanted to make this movie to honor Seretse & Ruth as well as to tell their story. But that David said he really wanted to make it for Jessica, a tribute to their relationship cause you know, they're in love, awww ha ha.
She also mentioned that because they also are a interracial couple, they too have experienced hate & that broke my heart. Brought me to tears again. Can't believe that still goes on this day & age.
This isn't the type of movie that I'll watch many times over, but I will want to own & see again. Check it out, learn more about World History. Glad I finally learned about this story.
