Review of A Tree Grows in Brooklyn (1945) by Jeff B — 09 Jun 2009
I didn't expect to love this movie so much. Elia Kazan's first film is extremely sweet and likeable about a girl growing up in the early 20th century. Her mom has to work all the time and her father is a drinker and a huge dreamer.
The whole cast is amazing, I was gonna say I loved so and so, but then I realized I'd pretty much be listing the whole cast. However I really loved James Dunn as the father (a very worthy Oscar win) and Joan Blondell as the aunt who was just so entertaining.
Sure, it's gets pretty sentimental at times, but it's just such an enjoyable film. Wonderful.
