Review of A Touch of Zen (1970) by Rebecca L — 14 Oct 2010
The wuxia masterpiece. A scholar and painted named Ku, a rather oafish character, becomes involved with a woman named Yang when a corrupt official attempts to have Yang assassinated because she is about to expose his corruption.
The film and characters continue to evolve, to the point where there is Buddhist enlightenment. The visual effects, cinematography and editing are absolutely spectacular. This is one of the films that inspired Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon - certainly in terms of the aerials and gravity defying characters.
Also, for those of us inundated with Christian imagery in our films, A Touch of Zen offers strong theme of Buddhism, which is certainly a fascinating contrast. A Touch of Zen cannot be recommended enough.
A 3+ hour masterpiece by a truly outstanding filmmaker.
