Review of A Thousand Times Good Night (2013) by Adina L — 24 Oct 2014
I saw this film as a sneak peek at the 2014 Port Townsend Film Festival. Academy Award winner Juliette Binoche stars as Rebecca, a well-respected photojournalist who focuses her lens on conflicts in some of the most dangerous regions in the world.
While in Kubal on an assignment taking photos of a female suicide bomber, Rebecca becomes badly injured in the attack. When Rebecca returns home, her two young daughters are thrilled that she is home safe while her husband, Marcus (played by Nikolaj Coster-Waldau of TVâ(TM)s Game of Thrones) is upset with the fact that Rebecca keeps putting herself in danger causing him and the children great anguish.
To save her marriage and family Rebecca gives up the more precarious jobs to be more present as a wife and mother. But when an assignment in Kenya, presumed so safe that she takes her daughter Steph along, turns deadly Rebecca cannot resist her need to document the story, once again putting herself in danger.
A veteran photographer of war conflicts for many years, director Erik Poppe, who co-wrote the screenplay with Harald Rosenlow-Eeg, tells a very powerful and emotional story. The performances from the cast were gut-wrenching.
The photos in the film were gripping. I think Juliette Binoche, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau & Lauryn Canny should get some award consideration for their strong performances. I highly recommend SEEING THIS FILM when it hits theatres on Oct.
