Review of A Thousand Clowns (1965) by Richard B — 11 Mar 2012
I am surprised that the critics reacted so negatively to this movie. To me this was a beautiful film that symbolized man's struggle between his individuality and desire to live free and the demands of a repressed society so bound up in its inhibitions that it chooses to exclude those who don't toe the line.
Robards' inevitable surrender to the dictates of society reminds me of an iconoclastic Pilgrim's Progress. This was Jason Robards' part of his life..
