Review of A Summer Place (1959) by Stewart F — 22 Jun 2011
Considering it's over half a century old (so one has to make allowance for the mores of the day), this film holds up remarkably well. Besides the issues of bigotry, class, and hypocrisy, it is also surprisingly frank about sex, teenage pregnancy and divorce. The main criticism would be that the story is perhaps too linear, too smooth and predictable.
Honourable mention, though, has to go to Connie Ford as Sandra Dee's cold, self-righteous mother- truly, the parent from hell.
Oh... I think there was also a rather nice tune in there as well!
