Review of A Streetcar Named Desire (1951) by Danette/Dani A — 27 Aug 2008
An amazing achievement in its translation to film, this movie deserves the acclaim thats heaped upon it. Heres the thing. Brando gives a performance that literally makes your blood boil, so vicious is his deliberate and horrific cruelty towards Blanche.
Some tend to think that Vivien Leighs performance is somewhat over theatrical (and its clear that her style is very different to the other Lee Strasberg schooled actors in this cast) but I feel that its warranted, considering that she's a rather delusional, fragile southern woman coming apart at the seams.
Its her performance that gives the film its heart, nad her final meltdown is truly heartbreaking to witness. A powerhouse film.
