Review of A Streetcar Named Desire (1951) by Henrik S — 11 Jan 2009
Although I am not a fan of Elia Kazan's straight-hand style of direction, Marlon Brando and Vivian Leigh skyrocket the movie's quality (with T. Williams script as a solid backbone) to the top. Awarded with three Academy awards, this movie is a very intense one, that still feels like a character-driven play, no wonder, the broadway show having been a runaway success.
The cast is magnificient and the story is touching, yet not as daring as the original play has been. I saw a theatre production a few years ago, and did not know about how much had been censored for Hollywood, which is a shame.
I would love to see an updated version, unfortunately there is Marlon Brando around anymore. A Classic.
