Review of A Streetcar Named Desire (1951) by Wrik S — 12 Jun 2009
Marlon Brando has been known as one of the first "Method" actors, and with this picture it is easy to see why. His performance as Stanley Kowalski is downright barbaric in its intensity. Very heavy and dark, A Streetcar Named Desire is easily one of the best character driven films ever made.
Vivien Leigh is nothing short of perfection as Blanche, Stanley's mentally unstable sister-in-law whose tragic life has slowly driven her to dementia. Seeing the two of them face off and Kim Hunter's Stella (Stanley's wife and Blanche's sister) being hopelessly trapped in the middle makes you rethink sexuality and the family dynamic.
Streetcar begs you to wonder just how far you would go for loyalty and love. An incredible triumph in motion picture history.
