Review of A Streetcar Named Desire (1951) by Ricardo O — 20 Oct 2009
"I have always depended on the kindness of strangers.".
This is a monumental milestone in the history of cinema. Method acting starts here. Both Marlon Brando and Vivien Leigh, in my personal favorite role of hers, give amazing performances and so do Kim Hunter and Karl Malden in their Oscar winning roles. Elia Kazan's direction as always is top notch and the whole atmosphere the film gets from the cinematography is like no other. It's a great script handled by the great filmmaker Elia Kazan with Vivien Leigh's last great performance, Marlon Brando's breakout performance that would influence countless generations to come and in my opinion Malden's second best performance after On the Waterfront which would come out a few years later. What else needs to be said?
Essential viewing for those into the Golden Age of cinema.
