Review of A Star Is Born (2018) by Brent_Marchant — 05 Oct 2018
An inoffensive but formula-driven retelling of this now-familiar tale (in its fourth screen iteration) that gets some things right and misses the mark on others. Musically brilliant, with an excellent acting debut by Lady Gaga and a fine cast of supporting characters, the film provides a great showcase for its headliner.
However, the picture is at its weakest in the writing, which incorporates a refreshingly surprising amount of humor but regrettably suffers from some prolonged bloat and character development that inexplicably and frequently bounces back and forth between polar opposites.
This is certainly a fine springboard for the film's leading lady, but it's a story that needs to be given a prolonged rest before anyone considers remaking it yet again.
