It should be clear to see that Martin Scorsese had this in mind making New York New York and it is very much a similar film. Both present loyal, caring partners of failures. But this film is a lot more focused and affecting than Scorsese's flawed film. James Mason is incredible and is nearly matched by Judy Garland in possibly her best performance.

Besides the film itself, the DVD release features the interesting longer cut of the film, complete with still photographs accompanying the dialogue.
